Band news 7/30/18 7th and 8th Grade Edition

Hello 7th and 8th grade band parents!

If you want to change, add, or remove your name from this mailing last, please let me know.

We hope to see you all at the open house this Wednesday at 6pm! I’ve attached the supply list and I will highlight some specific notes below! If you have any questions, please let me know!

All 7th/8th (but especially 7th): In 7th and 8th grade we use Essential Elements book 2. It has a red stripe on the top. Be sure to order online or at a music store!

Clarinet and Sax Players: Now that you aren’t in 6th grade anymore, you need to be playing on Vandoren 2.5 or 3 reeds. Vandoren 2 is now too soft for you and if you use it, you will play out of tune and your high range will be difficult.

Brass Players: If you have not played your instruments all summer, most of your slides and valves are going to be very sticky (or even stuck, in this case, let me handle it). You need to give your instrument a bath for it to start working properly again. See this video for the general idea. (Halfway through this video the guy uses balloons and brass polish to shine the outside, feel free to skip this part)

School rentals: For those students playing Tuba and other large instruments that are rented from the school, we will have the rental forms available during open house. We’d like payment the first week of school if possible.

Oboe/Bassoon: Make sure you get at least 3 “Medium-Soft” reeds. No NOT get “medium” reeds or “soft” reeds, it must be “Medium-soft”. If not, you’re going to have a bad time.

Percussion: Make sure you have a good matching pair of snare sticks and the mallets for your bell kit. If you lost your mallets, you will need to order a replacement. See the materials list for a replacement suggestion.

Looking forward to a great year!
