Band news 7/30/18 6th Grade Edition

Hello Band Parents!!!

We can’t wait to make some great music with you awesome kids! We hope to see you guys at the open house this Wednesday at 6:30pm. If you have any specific questions, it’s best to ask before then because the band room tends to be pretty packed with people that night. If you have any instruments that you’d like us to check the condition on, you can certainly bring it that night! Also, if you already have an instrument, we will have name tags available that tell the student which band locker is theirs. It’s nice not to worry about taking it to school on the first day.

I’ve attached the supply list. Many things on the list come with the instrument if you rent or buy it, but it’s best to check. If you’re not sure what some of the things are, just let me know! You definitely need to get the Essential Elements book, a 1in. Binder, and a small makeup mirror though. (Percussionists don’t need a mirror)

If you rented your instrument through Shen-Valley Band in Harrisonburg, they will drop off the instruments sometime this week. We will then hand them out to the students next week. If you got your instrument from Staunton Music, Music and Arts, or online, then I’m not sure when and where they will deliver. You may need to check with them. PLEASE DO NOT LET THEM PLAY THEIR INSTRUMENT BEFORE GETTING TRAINED! It builds bad habits and can break the instruments if they are put together incorrectly.

Some parents have been asking when we start working with the instruments. The first few days of school we are mostly checking off who has what from the materials list and getting the kids used to the routines of the band room. There are a lot of logistics involved with band class and 6th graders need a bit of practice with all of that. By day 4 or 5 we will start learning how to make sound.

I think that’s about it! Let me know if you have any questions!
